Surrounded by mounds of bags, a sign that reads, “Don’t Feed The Monster,” and wearing a slick suit made of plastic bags, the ‘Bag Monster’ makes himself at home on a busy Seattle street to educate the public about the adverse effects of single-use plastic bags.

An alter-ego created by the founder of ChicoBag, Andy Keller adorns himself in plastic armor woven together of 500 bags- the average amount a person uses in a year.

According to the Huffington Post, Keller has taken his costume on the road to raise awareness about single-use plastic bag pollution and encourage legislation banning plastic bags in cities across the country.

In each city he visits he sets the “stage” with a 900-foot-sign and lays out the amount of bags a person uses in a lifetime- about 45,000.

In the United States alone, 30 billion plastic and 10 billion paper grocery bags are consumed every year, costing 14 million trees and 12 million barrels of oil to produce. If everyone in the country tied their year’s worth of plastic bag usage together, the chain of bags would stretch around the planet 760 times, according to Bag Monster’s website,

Next on the Bag Monster’s tour is Santa Fe, Austin, Dallas, St. Louis, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Washington DC, Philadelphia and New York City. You can find his full schedule HERE or visit BagMonster.com for more information.
