Mark Hertsgaard Gives the Youth of Today a New Name: Generation Hot

Photo of power plant by Donna Kohut

Visualize a world with raging storms, water shortages and a Greenland without its ice. Imagine experiencing a southwestern climate while walking the streets of Chicago. Consider a rain forest that no longer absorbs carbon dioxide, but rather emits it. That world is what Generation Hot might have to anticipate.

Free-Range Eggs: What’s the Price for Freedom?

First whiff of freedom. Photo by Jo Barlow.

One amazing and heart warming characteristic of ex-battery chickens is that, from the day you rescue them, they produce eggs. These little girls have been bred to be egg machines and no matter how desperate their appearance, how featherless and scrawny they seem to be, eggs they will produce.

Washing Clothes With Less Environmental Impact

The items we put through the wash can take a beating from the harsh detergents and hard water used when going through the machine. And the more abuse the item gets the closer it gets to getting donated or tossed out. Caring for fabrics properly in the wash can prolong the life of your garments so that you are not replacing them sooner than actually needed, but when we do our wash we are doing much more than simply caring for our fabrics. We are using energy, water and product resources.

Stop Talking. Plant Trees.

Photo of Felix Finkbeiner by deutsche-welle via flickr

Lucky for us, it turns out that there are quite a few, and their notoriety is growing.

Don’t be Duped by Eco: The Value of Ecotourism Certifications

Traveling through the Canadian Rockies. Photo via Greenloons.

With the advent of words such as green, environmentally friendly, sustainable and eco as powerful marketing slogans, it should come as no surprise that many organizations within the tourism industry have adopted these terms to attract consumers.  There are financially lucrative reasons for marketing hotels and vacation activities in this manner since surveys have indicated that consumers are willing to pay a premium for a product when they are aware that an organization is environmentally conscious.

Global warming affects may not be immediately apparent to the tourists that visit Alaska’s National Parks every year, but the rangers and scientists that make Alaska their home are starting to see the disturbing changes.
