An Bountiful Eco Box

It’s hard when you are busy with work, friends and family to always stay up on the latest eco-conscious items. Luckily, Conscious Box has your solution.

Conscious Box is a monthly subscription service focusing on sustainability, environmental stewardship and social responsibility. With a monthly subscription the busy bee can get a wide array of eco-conscious items without searching them out in local health stores. Items include unique pure and natural products, organic food and even vegan beauty products. I got my hands on November’s box and I was so surprised to see the wide array of products that were included. Some of the stand-outs include the packet of Funky Monkey freeze dried fruit. Crunchy, tangy and sweet, Funky Monkey fruit snacks have no sugar added, are vegan, raw and gluten and peanut/tree nut free. 100% Pure body lotion, all natural, with organic and vegan ingredients. The lotion had a great smell and was made with no artificial fragrances, chemicals or preservatives. I like how hydrating the lotion was, and it was great on my sensitive skin. For the kids, and adults who are still kids at heart, there was Honest Tea Kid’s pouch, which is made with USDA certified organic ingredients, with no high fructose corn syrup. The company also has the Honest Kids Drink Pouch Brigade which helps plant trees, donate to charities, and keeps drink pouches out of land fills.

Captain Charles Moore: The Seas of Plastic

This week, I had the pleasure of watching Capt. Charles Moore, founder of the Algalita Marine Research Foundation, talk about his journey with plastics in our ocean. Within minutes of his presentation, you couldn’t help but feel for this concerning issue that simply doesn’t get enough media attention.

Cress: A Rare Vegetable that Grows in the Dead of Winter

For Christmas, W and I amassed quite a haul of stuff to make our balcony more exciting. From a wormery to a bird feeder, to a beautiful box of seeds and tips from Allotinabox. I even got a can with a sunflower seed in it. Eating locally just got a whole lot more local.

Lost Pathways to California Beaches

Photo of private beach path in Malibu, CA by beachhouse.malibu via flickr

California Coastal Commission members were surprised to find out that a large amount of Los Angeles County’s most desirable beaches were not being used by the public. In order to see what the problem was for themselves, they went on a bus tour that lead to some disappointing answers.

Thirty New Pets Through the Mail

Yesterday I received about 30 new pets through the mail (but shhh, don’t tell my landlord). 30 pets might sound excessive to you but they don’t take up that much space. I keep them in a plastic tub on my balcony and I’ll feed them on scraps once a day in about two weeks. This isn’t animal cruelty, this is the life of a womery owner.

Old jeans + Old Jeans = New Jeans

I thought I would share a little all-consuming activity I did over the holidays. My favourite pair of jeans have always been just slightly too short for comfortable wearing with anything that isn’t an ankle height boot. Luckily for me, the fashion at the moment is slightly too short trousers. However I’ve become increasingly aware that I,  a) I’m not really cool enough to pull off the short jeans look and b) my ankles feel the cold,  rather a lot.

Compact Condo

Bigger is not necessarily better. At least when it comes to houses. This year in America the average house size has decreased slightly. Most likely due to the (*sigh*) “Current Economic Climate” and other money issues. But possibly this dent could be attributed to these little homes making a rather big impact.

30 Days of Kombucha: Nature’s Femented Elixir

Kombucha Kamp is leading a 30 Day Challenge, challenging people far-and-wide to ditch their soda and opt for the ‘booch instead. Now, I haven’t been a soda drinker in ages and have never really been the type to make New Year’s resolutions – especially ones I knew I would never stick to. But the growing popularity of that symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast, known as kombucha, and the mystery surrounding its health benefits has intrigued me over the years. That, and I happen to be one of those peculiar people who love the sour vinegary-taste. So I figured, what do I have to lose – other than the possibility of achieving greater health!

Upcycled Wooden Christmas Tree

This year is my boyfriend and I’s first year in a flat by ourselves and so, in true girly style,  I was excited about our Christmas decorations. Due to space restraints, anything big was definitely out the question. Anything store bought was also off the table.
