I think you hit the nail on the head with education. It is the most important component in saving our environment. People need to be taught better practices and to be more vigilant about what they buy and what companies they support.

Vermont has always been so proactive in protecting the environment. I wish the rest of the US would stay this vigilant!

Hi Shannon, thanks so much for your advice - I did have a mini panic of 'is the tap off??' when I set it up but I'm pretty sure I have it figured out now....fingers crossed anyway!
Living in Britain I'm not sure it will get hot enough for them to fry for quite a while but I will certainly keep my eye on the little things!

Congrats on your new pets! One thing you may want to be careful with that type of setup is leaving the tea spout open. My friend did that by mistake during the summer. The worms got too hot, tried to escape and then all fried on her porch. There are few things that are as weird/sad as dead worms all over your porch, or in my case, basement floor. I wrote about my experience keeping worms here: http://willbikeforchange.wordpress.com/2011/02/20/our-squirmy-friends/. Although we've had our issues, they're doing quite well now.

Hey, Billie-Jo! You can find various brands of kombucha at your local health food market, more than likely. I would try a few and see which you like best. So far, I don't have a fave brand, but I do tend to prefer the less-sweetened varieties (like original flavor, ones with botanicals vs sugary flavoring, herb flavors, etc). You might have a different preference, though, so just try a few out! And as far as a recipe, here is a great one from Kombucha Kamp to hold you over until I post mine (Lavender Kombucha) next wee: http://bit.ly/fPcNAD. Happy fermenting!
