The Circle of Plastic Life

The past few months I’ve been setting in place some changes in my life in order to minimize my carbon footprint; becoming a vegetarian, using natural cosmetics, buying local, organic food, buying second-hand or sustainably produced clothes. Some changes have been big and others just small. Every couple of weeks I’ll discover something new that I will then insist my boyfriend, W, takes on too, whilst talking at him about what I’ve discovered in great length.

California Plastic Bag Ban Rejected by Lobbyists

What would have been the first bill to support a  statewide ban on plastic bags, failed late Tuesday evening. The bill was rejected after a debate over whether the state was overstepping their boundaries in trying to oppress the personal choice of residents.

‘Bag Monster’ Raises Awareness of Plastic Pollution

Surrounded by mounds of bags, a sign that reads, “Don’t Feed The Monster,” and wearing a slick suit made of plastic bags, the ‘Bag Monster’ makes himself at home on a busy Seattle street to educate the public about the adverse effects of single-use plastic bags.

Man Invents Machine to Turn Plastic into Oil

As long as companies proceed to manufacture products contained in plastic, and people continue to endorse theses organizations through supportive consumption, the Pacific Garbage Patch will continue to grow incessantly. Already twice the size of Texas, this entangled mess of non-biodegradable petro-trash mirrors the top ten percent most affluent segment of the world’s preference for convenience.

The Plastic Battle

In this short, one-minute film, Green Film Award winner, Ulla Jackobsen from Denmark presents a scene we are all familiar with and have all lived at one point in our lives, whether it was through our children, as children ourselves,  or recently in our adult lives.  Clear and to the point, this video does not need narration. We’ve all thought it; perhaps as we frantically search for a sharp object to puncture the purchased item we have laboriously slaved over getting open or after we have injured ourselves from doing so, “why on earth does every little piece of what I bought need to be wrapped in (insert timely curse word here) plastic?”
